09 Aug Project Drag Car racing ahead

ACM Parts’ drag car project with TAFE Queensland SkillsTech students is accelerating at warp speed, with baseline tests done and performance modifications underway.

ACM Parts earlier in the year donated the car plus parts to the much-hyped project that will see automotive students transform the 2007 Holden Commodore into a show-stopping drag racing machine.

The vehicle underwent a major service, the project team inspecting oils and service parts, before being taken to one of Willowbank Raceway’s Race Ya Mate events to see what it could do. The Commodore clocked a baseline quarter-mile time of 14.5 seconds in its first run in stock form, with a run on the chassis dyno turning nearly 202 rear wheel kilowatts.

SkillsTech students have since installed a performance exhaust system, which saw a gain of 25 kilowatts of power at the wheels, and are eager to head out again to track improvements.

Stay tuned for more project updates. In the meantime, check out our photos of the car on its first run and students busy analysing results.
